In a massive show of force, Catalans take to the streets of Barcelona on 11 November and demanded the release of arrested and detained political leaders, who are regarded as prisoners. Spanish police say that about 750,000 took part. Others suggest that the real figure was more than a million were there in a city of 1.7 million inhabitants. This suggest that the independence movement remains strong and may even cause an upset in the December election forced by the government in Madrid.
